Burundian president Évariste Ndayishimiye has travelled to Washington, D.C., in the United States, where he will attend the signing ceremony of a landmark peace agreement between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The event is scheduled for Thursday, December 4, 2025, in Washington, D.C., and will bring together the heads of state of both countries along with representatives of the US government.

The United States is expected to host president Paul Kagame of Rwanda and president Félix Tshisekedi of the DRC as they formalize a definitive peace accord, following an earlier agreement signed by the two countries’ Foreign Ministers.

In addition to the peace deal, presidents Kagame and Tshisekedi are also set to sign agreements aimed at strengthening economic cooperation.

President Ndayishimiye is among the regional leaders invited to this key diplomatic event, considered a significant moment for regional political stability.

Burundi has been actively involved in eastern DRC, where it deployed thousands of troops to support FARDC operations against AFC/M23, based on an understanding between Gitega and Kinshasa.

Tensions in eastern DRC have strained relations between Rwanda and Burundi in recent years, with Burundi keeping its land borders with Rwanda closed for a year.

Recently, Burundian Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro said his country wants to take part in the peace process and emphasized ongoing efforts to restore relations between Bujumbura and Kigali.
