The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has announced the arrest of Sheikh Bahame Hassan, Director of the Gitagata Rehabilitation Center, over allegations including abuse of authority for personal gain and soliciting or engaging in sexual favors from some individuals undergoing rehabilitation at the facility.

In a statement, RIB said investigations into the alleged offenses are ongoing. The suspect is currently being held at the RIB Remera Station in the City of Kigali, as case files are being prepared for submission to the National Prosecution Authority.

RIB emphasized that crimes related to abuse of power and sexual corruption are serious offenses punishable by law, particularly when committed by individuals entrusted with responsibilities to educate, protect, and rehabilitate others.

The bureau further warned all individuals involved in corruption, especially sexual corruption, to cease such acts immediately, stressing that they are illegal and have severe consequences for victims and for Rwandan society at large.

RIB also commended members of the public who show courage by speaking out and refusing to conceal such crimes. It urged citizens to continue providing timely information to help prevent offenses early and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.

Reports can be made through RIB hotlines, nearby security organs, or other authorized channels, with assurances that whistleblowers are protected by law.
