Rwanda National Police has confirmed that a serious road accident involving a fuel tanker in Kicukiro District on Monday evening claimed the lives of five people, while nine others sustained injuries.
The accident occurred at around 6:00 p.m. when a truck transporting petrol rammed into several vehicles, motorcycles and roadside infrastructure along the Nyanza ya Kicukiro road leading to Kicukiro Centre.
The incident caused widespread panic, as the truck was carrying petroleum products and also collided with a fuel station, raising fears of a possible fire outbreak.
Police said the crash resulted in extensive damage to multiple vehicles.
Five people lost their lives on the spot, while nine others were injured and rushed to hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.
As the year draws to a close, Rwanda National Police has renewed its call on road users, especially drivers, to prioritize road safety by avoiding speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and other reckless behaviors that could lead to traffic accidents.
