Ngoma: Lightning strike kills nine, injures 12

At least nine people were killed and 12 others injured after a lightning strike hit residents of Jarama Sector in Ngoma District on Sunday, January 4, 2026, local authorities have confirmed.

In a statement released on Monday, the Ngoma District administration said the victims were struck by lightning during heavy rainfall.

The injured are currently receiving medical treatment at Kibungo Hospital, while some remain under close medical observation.

District officials expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and to residents affected by the incident, describing it as a tragic natural disaster.

The administration said it has begun providing emergency assistance to affected families in coordination with the ministry responsible for emergency management and other relevant institutions.

Authorities also confirmed that burial arrangements are underway, with the victims expected to be laid to rest on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the Sake public cemetery.

Local authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures during storms as the rainy season continues.
