Social media users in Rwanda are closely monitoring online platforms as anticipation grows over the expected arrival of global internet sensation Darren Jason Watkins Jr., popularly known as IShowSpeed.

The excitement intensified after videos circulated online showing IShowSpeed in Zimbabwe, where he indicated that Rwanda would be his next destination in the near future.

Shortly afterward, he shared a post on his Snapchat account suggesting that he was moving toward his next stop, further fueling speculation about his imminent arrival in Kigali.

This heightened interest coincides with reports that the popular streamer is expected to attend the Super Cup finals scheduled to take place at Amahoro Stadium.

The event will feature a women’s football match between Rayon Sports Women and Indahangarwa, followed by a high-profile men’s encounter between Rayon Sports FC and APR FC.

IShowSpeed has been touring several African countries over the past nine days as part of his “Speed Does Africa Tour.”

His journey has so far included South Africa, Angola, Eswatini, Mozambique, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, where his energetic interactions with local communities have attracted widespread online attention.

During his travels, he has indicated plans to visit Volcanoes National Park once in Rwanda, with a particular interest in seeing the mountain gorillas. However, he has suggested that this visit may not be broadcast live due to the dense forest environment.

From online beginnings to global recognition

Born Jason Watkins Jr. in Cincinnati, Ohio, IShowSpeed is 20 years old. He developed an early interest in video games and digital entertainment, initially creating content from his bedroom with the ambition of reaching a global audience.

He began posting videos on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch at the age of 14, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period marked by increased online engagement worldwide. His early livestreams attracted very limited viewership, a challenge that led him to leave school in order to focus fully on building his online presence.

Over time, his consistency and unique style helped him build a massive following. With his early earnings from YouTube, he was able to provide significant financial support to his family and acquire luxury vehicles while still a teenager.

A mission to change perceptions about Africa

In recent years, IShowSpeed has expanded his content beyond gaming to include travel and cultural exploration. His decision to tour Africa was driven by a desire to challenge widely held misconceptions about the continent.

Through firsthand experience, he has highlighted Africa’s modern cities, cleanliness, vibrant communities, and high quality of life, contrasting sharply with the negative narratives often circulated online. He has also emphasized the sense of happiness and reduced social pressure he observed across the countries he visited.

By sharing these experiences with his global audience, IShowSpeed aims to present a more accurate and positive image of Africa, showcasing the uniqueness and cultural richness of each country he visits, including Rwanda.

Beyond digital content creation, he has also expressed interest in athletics, particularly sprinting, and has indicated ambitions to compete at the 2028 Olympic Games.

As anticipation continues to grow, many Rwandan fans are awaiting confirmation of when the global internet star will officially arrive in the country.
