A Rwandan woman has died while in police custody in northern Tanzania, authorities said, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The deceased, identified as Uwumuhoza Viollete, died on January 7, 2026, at a police station in Arusha, according to Tanzanian police.
Local media outlet The Tanzania Times, citing a police statement, reported that initial investigations have not conclusively established the cause of death.
A preliminary report from Tanzania’s national police headquarters in Dodoma indicated that Uwumuhoza may have died by suicide while in detention, though officials emphasized that this finding is not final and remains subject to further review.
Uwumuhoza had been arrested on immigration-related offenses, including illegal entry and unlawful residence in Tanzania, after authorities determined she lacked valid residency documents.
Police said additional details will be released once investigations are completed.
