Rwanda and Togo have officially signed an agreement allowing citizens of both countries to travel without visas. The deal was finalized in Lomé, Togo, on Friday, January 16, 2026, by Rwanda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, and his Togolese counterpart, Professor Robert Dussey.
The agreement follows bilateral discussions aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and facilitating easier travel between the two nations.
Minister Nduhungirehe’s visit to Togo coincided with a high-level regional summit on peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Great Lakes region.
Ahead of the main summit, he held talks with key leaders, including Huang Xia, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for the Great Lakes Region, and Vivian Van de Perre, Acting Head of MONUSCO, focusing on ongoing security challenges in the DRC.
Preliminary discussions also included representatives from the African Union (AU), the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The summit aims to resume peace talks between the DRC government and the AFC/M23 coalition.
The visa-free agreement marks a significant step in Rwanda–Togo relations, facilitating travel, business, and stronger bilateral cooperation.
