Police in Nyanza District have arrested several managers of Urubuto Hotel, formerly Dayenu Hotel, following the death of a 45-year-old security guard who drowned in the hotel’s swimming pool.
The deceased, Charles Nzabihimana, was on duty at the hotel located in downtown Nyanza when the incident occurred. His body has been taken to Nyanza District Hospital while investigations continue.
Authorities say the arrests include the hotel owner and two managers, with other staff members still under investigation. Preliminary inquiries were launched after residents reported the incident to the police.
Chief Inspector Hassan Kamanzi, Southern Province police spokesperson, urged all hotels with recreational facilities to assign trained personnel to supervise swimming pools at all times. “A lifeguard or technician must be present whenever the pool is open, ready to provide immediate assistance in emergencies,” he said.
This is not the first drowning at the hotel. When it operated as Dayenu in 2017, two students from IGIHOZO Saint Peter Secondary School drowned in the same pool.
