Hundreds of Kigali residents took part in the first Car-Free Day of 2026 on Sunday, using the occasion to promote city cleanliness, early disease screening, and support for the upcoming 27th African Men’s Handball Championship.

The event, held at the Kigali Convention Center (KCC) grounds, was attended by top government officials, including Minister of Local Government Dominique Habimana, Minister of Public Service and Labour Ambassador Christine Nkulikiyinka, and Kigali City Mayor Dusengimana Samuel. Representatives from schools, public institutions, and private companies such as RCS were also present.

Organizers highlighted the health and environmental benefits of the initiative, noting that reducing vehicle use for the day helps lower air pollution, protects the environment, and encourages physical activity.

On-site health services offered residents screenings and information on preventing common communicable diseases.

The handball organizing committee used the platform to call on residents to attend the championship, scheduled from Wednesday, January 21, to Saturday, January 31, at BK Arena and Petit Stade.

The tournament is expected to feature leading national teams from across Africa.

Similar fitness events were held in other districts, including Karongi, Gakenke, Gatsibo, Bugesera, Kayonza, Musanze, Ngoma, and Rwamagana, as part of nationwide efforts to promote healthy lifestyles and community engagement through public sports initiatives.
