Construction works on the Muhazi Water Supply System, a major water treatment plant set to serve residents of Gatsibo and Kayonza districts in Rwanda’s Eastern Province, are progressing steadily.

The facility will supply clean water to an estimated 548,594 residents, including those in the sectors of Murundi, Rukara, and Gahini in Kayonza District, as well as five sectors in Gatsibo District, namely Kiramuruzi, Kiziguro, Murambi, Remera, and Rugarama.

Jointly serving the two districts, the water treatment plant is being constructed along the shores of Lake Muhazi, which will be its primary water source. Once operational, the facility is expected to treat 12,000 cubic meters of water per day. Construction of the treatment plant and the main water distribution network under Phase One of the project is nearing completion.

So far, a total of 256 kilometers of water pipelines have been installed, alongside 11 water storage reservoirs and 165 public water points, significantly improving access to clean water for communities in the project area.

Currently, Gatsibo District has achieved 86.7 percent coverage in access to clean water, a figure expected to increase further once the project is completed.

Phase-One of the Muhazi water treatment plant project is being implemented at a cost of Rwf 19.46 billion and is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2026.

The water treatment plant is located along the shores of Lake Muhazi.
