Students of Ntare Louisenlund School in Nyamata, Bugesera District, have been urged to embrace the values that defined Rwanda’s national heroes, as the country marked the 32nd National Heroes Day.

The message was delivered by the Deputy Spokesperson of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), Lt Col Simon Kabera, during a public lecture titled “The Importance of National Heroes,” attended by students and staff of the school.

Speaking as part of the national commemoration activities, Lt Col Kabera highlighted patriotism, selflessness, integrity, dedication to duty, the pursuit of the common good, and respect for human life and dignity as the core values that underpin heroism in Rwanda’s history.

He described heroism as the commitment to noble causes through exceptional actions that serve others, rooted in sacrifice, resilience, truth and justice.

Lt Col Kabera also outlined the three categories of Rwanda’s national heroes—Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi—emphasising the responsibility of citizens, particularly young people, to preserve and promote these values.

He cautioned students against behaviours that undermine personal dignity and national values, including alcohol and drug abuse, violence, poor hygiene and the misuse of digital technology.

The RDF Deputy Spokesperson encouraged students to play an active role in nation-building by drawing inspiration from national heroes and exemplary leadership.

He urged them to safeguard Rwanda’s achievements, strengthen national unity and consistently choose what is right over what is wrong.

Lt Col Kabera further stressed the importance of valuing and properly using the Kinyarwanda language, while remaining vigilant against negative external cultural influences. He called on students to reject harmful practices while embracing positive change that strengthens Rwandan culture.

Rwandans across the country marked the 32nd National Heroes Day, reaffirming the central role of heroism and unity in Rwanda’s continued journey of national reconstruction and development.
