Rwanda’s ambassador to Kenya, Erneste Rwamucyo, has praised Mount Kenya University (MKU) for its significant role in advancing education in Rwanda and the East African region.
The commendation came during his visit to MKU’s main campus in Thika, Kenya, where he was welcomed by the university’s founder and vice-chancellor, Prof. Simon Gicharu.
Ambassador Rwamucyo highlighted MKU as a key partner of Rwanda, particularly through its Kigali-based branch, Mount Kigali University (MKUR).
“Mount Kenya University is a vital partner for Rwanda. Despite Kenya’s large education market, the founders chose to invest in Rwanda, which we see as a strong vote of confidence in our country,” he said.
He noted that the partnership extends beyond MKU’s presence in Rwanda, with many Rwandan students pursuing studies in Kenya, especially in programs unavailable locally.
“This strengthens bilateral relations, with education serving as a cornerstone of Kenya-Rwanda cooperation,” he added, urging students to leverage opportunities to engage with peers from across the region and Africa. “Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers. Building networks early will benefit your careers and lives.”
Prof. Gicharu praised the Rwandan government for facilitating investment and supporting quality education. He noted that MKU’s collaboration with Rwanda has enhanced education standards and created opportunities for the region’s youth.
During the visit, Prof. Gicharu presented Ambassador Rwamucyo with a book, “Mountain Meets Land of 1,000 Hills”, chronicling the journey of Mount Kigali University, its cross-border challenges, and its socio-economic impact.
The two sides also discussed ways to further strengthen educational development, research collaboration, and knowledge exchange between Kenya and Rwanda, reaffirming their commitment to advancing East Africa’s education sector.
