What was meant to be the beginning of a new life turned into heartbreak for a young woman after her newly wedded husband allegedly deceived her about their marital home and left her stranded in Kigali.
The incident occurred on Thursday, February 12, shortly after the couple exchanged vows in a civil ceremony in Kamonyi District.
Speaking to local media, the bride said her partner had assured her that he had rented a house in Kigali, specifically in the Kanogo area of Nyamirambo, where they would begin their married life. Trusting his word, she traveled to the capital accompanied by her maid of honor, carrying their belongings, including clothing and traditional beverages.
However, upon arrival in Kigali around midday, she discovered there was no house.
“He told me he had secured a home in Nyamirambo, in Kanogo. I believed him,” she said. “When we arrived, instead of taking us home, he led us to a bar.”
According to the bride, the groom kept them waiting for hours at the bar, claiming he wanted to introduce her to his friends before heading to their house. As time passed, it became clear that there was no residence arranged for them.
Left confused and humiliated, the bride and her companion were eventually taken to spend the night at the Rwampara Cell office along with their belongings.
Local authorities later asked the young woman what she wished to do. She responded that she wanted to return to her family home. Meanwhile, the groom reportedly suggested he intended to take his wife back to the countryside.
The incident has sparked conversations online about trust, responsibility, and the importance of transparency before marriage.
