A bride died and nine other people injured on Saturday morning after a minibus carrying a wedding party overturned in Rulindo District.

The accident occurred at around 9:30am on February 14, 2026, in Gashoro village, Tumba sector, as the group was heading to a wedding ceremony at Tumba Parish.

According to the Rwanda National Police, the vehicle, a Toyota Hiace minibus, lost control while negotiating a sharp bend.

Traffic police spokesperson Emmanuel Kayigi said the driver was speeding at the time of the crash.

“The minibus was transporting passengers to Tumba Parish. On reaching Gashoro village, the driver, who was overspeeding on a corner, failed to properly negotiate the bend. The vehicle hit an embankment and overturned onto its side. One person died instantly and nine others were injured,” he said.

Emergency response teams rushed to the scene. Some of the injured were treated at Tumba Health Centre, while others were transferred to Nemba Hospital for further medical care.

Police attributed the crash to excessive speed and urged motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly on sharp bends and hilly terrain.

Kayigi called on drivers to strictly observe speed limits and prioritize safety over urgency.

“Careful driving and respecting the prescribed speed are critical. No urgency is worth a human life. When an accident occurs, you do not reach what you were rushing for,” he said.

He also reminded road users to adhere to the ongoing road safety campaign, Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro, which encourages responsible driving to prevent avoidable road fatalities.
