The Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB), in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has launched a $9 million initiative to address climate-related challenges in the Western Province.
The project will focus on environmental conservation solutions to prevent recurring floods, soil erosion, and land degradation in disaster-prone areas of Rusizi and Karongi districts.
These districts are frequently hit by landslides that damage homes, schools, roads, and other infrastructure.
In May 2023, heavy rains caused severe floods across the country, with the western region most affected. Nationwide, the disasters claimed 135 lives, destroyed over 5,000 homes, and disrupted critical infrastructure, highlighting the urgent need for resilience measures.
