President Kagame and First Lady join Car Free Day
President Paul Kagame and First Lady Jeannette Kagame joined residents of the City of Kigali for the monthly public fitness event known as Car Free Day.
Held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, the exercise also attracted senior government officials, including the Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports, Rwego Ngarambe; the Minister of Health, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana; and the Mayor of Kigali, Samuel Dusengiyumva, among others.
President Kagame was seen interacting with participants, greeting residents and children who had turned up in large numbers for the activity.
Launched in May 2016, Car Free Day aims to promote a culture of regular physical exercise and healthier lifestyles among Kigali residents.
The initiative also focuses on preventing non-communicable diseases, with participants offered health education and free medical check-ups during the event.
Although it began in Kigali, Car Free Day has steadily expanded beyond the capital, with similar activities now being embraced across other provinces, reflecting its growing national impact.
