The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has expressed profound condolences to Rwandans following a fatal accident on the opening stage of the 2026 Tour du Rwanda that claimed two lives and injured six others.

UCI President David Lappartient described the incident as “deeply saddening,” extending sympathy to the families and friends of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.

The international cycling race began on February 22, 2026, with Stage One running from Gicumbi to Rwamagana District. The tragedy occurred in Gatsibo at Gabiro, when a race vehicle veered off the road and struck spectators gathered along the route.

Two people died instantly, while six others were rushed to hospital. The Rwanda National Police has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.

Following the stage, Rwanda Cycling Federation President Ndayishimiye Samson called on residents in Rwamagana to observe a moment of remembrance for those who lost their lives.

Candy Basomingera, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Sports, urged road users to strictly observe traffic rules and called on spectators to remain vigilant while supporting the cyclists. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in the first stage of the Tour du Rwanda,” she said. “We extend our condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a full and swift recovery.”

The accident underscores the importance of road safety measures and strict event management during major sporting events.
