Gorilla FC stunned newly crowned FERWAFA Super Cup champions Kiyovu Sports 1-0 on the opening day of the 2026/27 BK Pro League season, while Amagaju FC made an impressive start by defeating Etoile de l’Est 2-0.
The opening day produced contrasting fortunes for the two sides, with Amagaju emerging as the early leaders after collecting three points and a two-goal advantage, while Kiyovu were left to pick up the pieces after an unexpected defeat.
Gorilla deliver early shock
Kiyovu Sports went into the match with confidence after winning the 2026 FERWAFA Super Cup just days earlier, but Gorilla FC quickly overturned the expectations.
Gorilla struck after just four minutes, with Sunday Inemesit finding the back of the net with what proved to be the only goal of the match.
Kiyovu spent much of the game searching for an equaliser but were repeatedly frustrated by Gorilla goalkeeper Cuzuzo Aimé Gaël, who produced a strong performance to keep the former champions at bay.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for Gorilla and handed Kiyovu an early setback in their league campaign.
Amagaju off to a flying start
At Nyamagabe, Amagaju FC began their campaign on a high, beating Etoile de l’Est 2-0 to move to the top of the provisional standings.
The first half ended goalless, but Amagaju returned from the break with greater attacking intent.
Tuyisenge Pacifique broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, finishing from a pass by Jordan Dimbumba.
Amagaju continued to push for a second and eventually secured all three points in stoppage time.
Ayirala Samson was fouled inside the penalty area, earning Amagaju a penalty. Goalkeeper Nicolas Sebwato converted from the spot to complete the 2-0 victory.
The result puts Amagaju at the summit after the first round of fixtures, with three points and a two-goal difference.
Etincelles and Sunrise share points
The third opening-day fixture, played at Stade de Kamena, ended without a goal as Etincelles FC and Sunrise FC settled for a 0-0 draw.
The league continues on Sunday, when Marine FC face Kigali FC and Mukura VS take on Gasogi United.
Police FC will host Gicumbi FC on Monday.
With only one round of matches completed, Amagaju have taken the early lead, while Gorilla have already delivered one of the season’s first major surprises by knocking off Kiyovu.
