Conflict in Congo delays reopening of Gisenyi Airport, Rubavu officials say

The reopening of Gisenyi Airport in Rubavu District has been delayed due to ongoing insecurity in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities say. The airport, which has been inactive for years, is located near the border with Goma, a city affected by occasional unrest.

Rubavu Mayor Prosper Mulindwa said rehabilitation works, which began in 2025, are now nearing completion. Upgrades include runway markings, perimeter fencing, and the installation of navigation equipment to ensure safe aircraft operations. Non-physical requirements, such as revised air routes and regulatory approvals, are also being finalized.

“The insecurity in the neighbouring country was one of the key challenges delaying the reopening, considering the airport’s proximity to the border,” Mulindwa said, noting that aircraft operating in shared airspace must meet strict safety standards.

Authorities remain optimistic that once reopened, the airport will boost tourism and trade in Rubavu, a popular lakeside destination. Residents welcome the development, citing potential growth in business opportunities and improved livelihoods.

The airport has now been fenced to ensure security.
