Two players from Spain’s Atlético de Madrid Women’s team, Carmen Menayo Montero and María Dolores Gallardo Núñez, popularly known as ‘Lola,’ are spending their holidays exploring the beauty and heritage of Rwanda.
Through the Visit Rwanda initiative, Atlético de Madrid sends its players, staff, and coaches, both men’s and women’s teams, to experience Rwanda’s scenic landscapes and cultural landmarks. On their social media platforms, the club showcased Lola and Menayo enjoying Rwanda’s attractions.
On their first day, the players visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial on Gisozi Hill, paying tribute to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. They then traveled to Nyanza District, specifically the Rukali area, where they learned about Rwanda’s royal history and traditions. There, they encountered the famous Inyambo cows, traditional long-horned cattle unique to Rwanda, taking photos and learning about their historical significance.
Their tour continued across the country, exploring Rwanda’s natural attractions, including the scenic Lake Kivu, a popular destination for visitors. The players also visited Volcanoes National Park in Musanze District, where they observed diverse wildlife, including Rwanda’s endangered mountain gorillas.
Carmen Menayo Montero, 27, plays as a defender and serves as captain of Atlético de Madrid Women’s team, having played over 200 matches for the club. María Dolores, 32, is the team’s goalkeeper and has been with Atlético since 2012, making her one of the longest-serving players.
Their visit not only highlights Rwanda’s cultural and natural wealth but also strengthens the connection between global football and the country’s tourism promotion efforts.
