The WASAC Group has announced a planned water supply interruption affecting 16 sectors across Kigali and Bugesera this Wednesday, March 4, citing maintenance works at the Kanzenze Water Treatment Plant.

In a public notice shared on X, the national water and sanitation utility said the temporary outage is necessary to facilitate repairs on parts of the treatment facility.

Sectors set to experience the disruption include Kimironko, Remera, Ndera, Niboye, Kicukiro, Gahanga, Kigarama, Gikondo, Gatenga, Kanombe and Nyarugunga in the City of Kigali, as well as Ntarama, Nyamata, Mwogo, Juru and Rilima in Bugesera District.

WASAC apologised to customers likely to be affected and urged them to make necessary arrangements during the maintenance period.

Commissioned in 2021 at a cost of $63 million (about Rwf61 billion), the Kanzenze Water Treatment Plant has a daily treatment capacity of 40,000 cubic metres. Approximately 30,000 cubic metres are channelled to Kigali, while the remaining 10,000 cubic metres serve communities in Bugesera.

The plant currently supplies water to several parts of Kigali, including Kanombe, Kicukiro, Remera, Kimironko, Busanza and Ndera, as well as the Masoro Industrial Zone. Authorities have previously indicated that supply would gradually expand to other peri-urban areas such as Kamonyi, Nduba and Karuruma as infrastructure is extended.

It has the capacity to treat 40,000 cubic metres of water per day.
