His Excellency President Paul Kagame has wished Rwandan women a happy International Women’s Day, commending their growing contributions to the country’s development.

The message, shared on his official X account on Sunday, March 8, 2026, coincided with Rwanda’s celebration of International Women’s Day under the theme: “A Woman is Valuable.” President Kagame highlighted that women’s impact on Rwanda’s transformation goes far beyond this annual celebration.

He emphasized that gender equality and balanced representation across all sectors remain critical to sustainable national development, noting that meaningful progress is achieved when inclusion is observed at every level of society.

Data from the Rwanda Association of Local Government Authorities (RALGA) as of January 2026 shows that women occupy 41% of district council positions, with 30% serving as district leaders and 30% as deputy district leaders in charge of economic affairs.

At the local level, women hold 17% of sector executive secretary positions, 28% of cell leadership roles, and 39% of village committee posts, demonstrating their growing influence in governance structures nationwide.

These figures reflect Rwanda’s continued commitment to empowering women and promoting gender equality, ensuring that women remain central to the country’s development agenda.
