Jamaica has lauded Rwandan troops for their critical role in recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa, which struck the island in October 2025. The Caribbean nation highlighted the Rwandan team’s contribution in rebuilding communities, restoring infrastructure, and providing hope to affected families.

The Jamaican Defence Force shared photos of Rwandan soldiers in action, noting their dedication and sacrifice during one of the country’s most severe recent disasters. “We will never forget the commitment and hard work you demonstrated during this challenging time,” the military said.

Hurricane Melissa caused widespread destruction, killing 45 people and leaving over 15 missing, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). More than 450 schools and 120,000 homes were damaged, leaving 950 families without shelter.

On January 14, 2026, Rwanda deployed a specialized team of soldiers to assist Jamaica in recovery and reconstruction. Over two months, the team, working alongside local forces, rebuilt 62 homes destroyed by the storm, added classrooms to damaged schools, and renovated a facility caring for children with disabilities.

The Jamaican Defence Force emphasized that the Rwandan troops’ efforts left a lasting impact on the communities they served. “Your support has made an indelible mark, transforming lives and restoring hope for the people of Jamaica,” the statement read.

This operation highlights Rwanda’s growing reputation for effective international humanitarian assistance, demonstrating its capacity to provide both immediate relief and sustainable reconstruction in regions affected by natural disasters.
