Rwandan President Paul Kagame has issued a stern warning to government leaders, stressing that repeatedly making the same mistakes or continuing the errors of predecessors reflects negligence and undermines effective governance.

The remarks came during a high-level meeting with central government officials and local leaders at the Rwanda Military Academy on Monday, March 23, 2026.

Kagame highlighted concerns over leaders who repeatedly commit the same errors, describing such behavior as laziness and counterproductive. He underscored that public office carries the responsibility to deliver results, and officials who fail to meet expectations should step aside to allow for more competent leadership.

The president also urged local-level leaders to conduct thorough self-assessments before considering re-election in future terms. He stressed that focusing on upcoming elections without reflecting on past performance and achievements undermines effective governance.

Prior to the address, officials at the meeting had engaged in self-criticism, recognizing areas where their performance had fallen short and committing to improvements. Kagame acknowledged their reflections and praised the clarity and constructiveness of the discussions.

The meeting reinforces Kagame’s continued focus on accountability within Rwanda’s governance system, emphasizing that responsible leadership at both national and local levels is critical for the country’s progress.
