Authorities in Nyanza District have arrested a 73-year-old man suspected of killing his grandmother, in a case believed to be linked to a domestic dispute.
The incident occurred in Ruvuzo Village, Nyarurama Cell, Cyabakamyi Sector.
According to preliminary information, the victim, Sarah Mukabutera, left her home on March 24, 2026, to work in her field but did not return. Concerned family members later found her with serious injuries and rushed her to hospital. She succumbed to the injuries on March 25.
Southern Province Police spokesperson, CIP Hassan Kamanzi, confirmed the arrest, stating that it was conducted in coordination with the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
“A 73-year-old man, believed to be the victim’s grandson, is in custody on suspicion of involvement in the assault that led to her death,” he said.
While the exact motive remains under investigation, sources indicate the suspect may have recently returned from Uganda and could have been involved in a dispute related to inheritance.
The body of the deceased is at Nyanza District Hospital for postmortem, while the suspect is detained at Nkomero RIB station pending further investigation.
Police have urged the public to avoid acts of violence, emphasizing that such offenses carry serious legal consequences and will be prosecuted accordingly.
