Rwanda has exceeded the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 95-95-95 targets for HIV, achieving significant progress in controlling the virus nationwide.

Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva shared the update while presenting an overview of the health sector to Parliament. The WHO targets aim for 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of those to receive treatment, and 95% of those on treatment to achieve viral suppression.

Rwanda has now surpassed these benchmarks: 96% of people living with HIV know their status, 98% are on treatment, and 98% have achieved viral suppression.

“These achievements reflect Rwanda’s commitment and consistent efforts toward clear health objectives,” Dr. Nsengiyumva said.

Currently, around 230,000 people living with HIV are under care in Rwanda, and new infections have dropped to about 3,200 per year.

While non-communicable diseases continue to rise, Rwanda maintains vigilance against infectious diseases. The Ministry of Health continues to leverage technology, innovation, and strategic interventions to address these health challenges concurrently.

The government is also strengthening efforts in disease prevention, health worker training, and expanding access to quality health services for all Rwandans.
