Senate President Dr. François-Xavier Kalinda has called on Rwandans to remain united, support genocide survivors, and actively oppose attacks by those who deny or trivialize the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

His remarks came as he joined residents of Kigali in a community service activity (Umuganda) marking the end of March on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

The nationwide Umuganda focused on cleaning genocide memorials, constructing facilities for survivors, and other preparatory activities ahead of the 32nd commemoration of the genocide.

In Kigali, Dr. Kalinda participated in cleaning the Nyanza Genocide Memorial in Kicukiro District. He commended citizens for their commitment, describing their efforts as invaluable.

“These actions, if measured in monetary terms, would be significant. I thank you all for participating in large numbers,” he said.

Dr. Kalinda encouraged citizens to continue fostering unity and supporting survivors, especially as the country prepares to remember the 1994 genocide. He also stressed the importance of confronting genocide denial and combating any form of violence against survivors.

Across Rwanda, local leaders joined citizens in these initiatives, leading up to the official commemoration on April 7, when the nation marks the 32nd anniversary of the genocide.

The Senate President urged all Rwandans to participate in memorial activities and avoid any acts that could harm survivors during the mourning week and the 100 days of remembrance.
