Three night patrol members ‘Abanyerondo’ have been arrested in Nyamagabe District in connection with the fatal assault of a resident in Gasaka Sector.
The incident occurred in Kabacuzi Village, Nyamugari Cell, within the urban centre of Nyamagabe.
The victim, Rwangabwoba Ignace, widely known as Gasongo, was a bus park assistant at the Nyamagabe–Rusizi stage. He was reportedly returning home with his wife when they found night patrol members allegedly beating another resident.
According to reports, he intervened in an attempt to stop the assault but was instead attacked and severely beaten. He was later taken to a health facility for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police spokesperson for the Southern Province, CIP Hassan Kamanzi, confirmed the arrests, noting that the suspects are in custody and under investigation by the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
The victim’s body was transferred to Kigeme Hospital for further examination.
Police have condemned the incident and warned against acts of violence, stressing that mob justice remains a criminal offence. Residents have been urged to report suspected wrongdoing through appropriate channels to prevent escalation that can lead to serious harm or loss of life.
