Rwanda is experiencing a notable increase in fuel prices, prompting a corresponding rise in public transport fares in Kigali and across the provinces.
The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) announced the revised rates on Friday, April 3, 2026, citing changes in global petroleum markets and government efforts to mitigate the impact of rising international fuel costs.
Starting Saturday, April 4, 2026, at 6:00 a.m., petrol will sell at 2,303 Frw per litre, up from 1,988 Frw, while diesel (Mazutu) will rise to 2,205 Frw per litre from 1,948 Frw last month.
The fuel price hike has also affected public transport fares, with passengers now expected to pay 59.28 Frw per kilometre in Kigali and 41.58 Frw per kilometre in the provinces, effective Monday, April 6, 2026.
RURA urged citizens to plan their trips carefully, prioritize public transport, and avoid unnecessary journeys to curb fuel consumption. The authority also assured ongoing monitoring of the market to maintain fair pricing and quality service delivery.
