Kigali City to end sponsorship of Kiyovu Sports

Kiyovu Sports will lose financial backing from the City of Kigali at the end of June after the city confirmed it will not renew its sponsorship agreement with the historic football club.

In a letter dated June 1, 2026, Kigali City informed Kiyovu Sports that their partnership, which expires on June 30, will come to an end, bringing to a close a one-year sponsorship deal signed in July 2025.

The move comes as Kigali City pursues plans to streamline its support for football clubs. Kiyovu Sports, alongside AS Kigali and Gasogi United, has been advised to merge into a single team as the city seeks to end funding for multiple clubs.

In a letter signed by Kigali City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva, the club was thanked for its cooperation and contribution to the development of sport and talent promotion during the partnership.

“I thank you for the cooperation and achievements realized throughout our collaboration in promoting sports and nurturing talent in the City of Kigali,” the mayor wrote.

The decision leaves Kiyovu Sports facing fresh financial uncertainty and the challenge of securing alternative sources of funding ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Founded in 1964, Kiyovu Sports is one of Rwanda’s oldest and most successful football clubs. Popularly known as Urucaca, the club enjoys a loyal following, particularly in Nyamirambo, where it has deep historical roots.

Despite recent financial struggles, Kiyovu Sports enjoyed a relatively successful 2025/26 campaign, finishing fifth in the BK Pro League. The club remains one of Rwanda’s most decorated football institutions and a prominent name in the country’s football history.
