The Government of Rwanda has announced that the 2026/2027 national budget will place strong emphasis on boosting agricultural productivity as part of efforts to strengthen domestic economic resilience and ensure food security.

The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Yusuf Murangwa, told Parliament on Thursday that the country will spend Rwf 7,796.3 billion in the 2026/27 fiscal year, which begins on July 1, 2026.

The proposed budget reflects an increase of Rwf 844.2 billion compared to the 2025/26 fiscal year.

Murangwa said the budget was prepared in consideration of global economic uncertainties, including ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that continue to influence commodity prices and global markets.

He said a significant share of the budget will go toward strengthening domestic production, with agriculture identified as a key priority sector.

“The key focus of this budget is to increase agricultural productivity so that, even in the face of external shocks, the country remains food secure,” he told lawmakers.

He highlighted a notable increase in funding for agricultural inputs, particularly fertilizers. Allocation for fertilizer support has risen from Rwf 39 billion in the previous fiscal year to Rwf 64 billion in the 2026/27 budget, nearly doubling government support to farmers.

Beyond fertilizers, Murangwa said the government will also scale up investment in irrigation infrastructure to reduce reliance on rainfall and improve agricultural yields.

Officials say the increased investment is aimed at boosting food production, improving farmer productivity, and strengthening long-term national food security.
