Sudanese community in Rwanda hails Kagame’s commitment to African unity

Members of the Sudanese community in Rwanda have praised President Paul Kagame’s continued advocacy for African unity, saying stronger cooperation among African nations is critical to the continent’s long-term peace, prosperity, and self-reliance.

The sentiments were expressed during a dialogue organized on July 11 by the Rwanda chapter of the Pan African Movement (PAM Rwanda), which brought together members of the Sudanese community—most of them students and young professionals—to reflect on Africa’s liberation journey and Rwanda’s remarkable transformation over the past 32 years following the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Participants said the discussions underscored the importance of unity and collective action in addressing Africa’s shared challenges and accelerating the continent’s development.

Ghufran Osamaa, a Sudanese student studying at a university in Rwanda, said the event strengthened his appreciation of the role regional integration can play in shaping Africa’s future.

“Today’s discussion showed me that Africa cannot achieve meaningful unity unless its people come together to understand the continent’s challenges and develop lasting solutions,” Osamaa said. “I leave with a deeper conviction that cooperation among African countries is essential if we are to build a prosperous and resilient continent.”

Sudan’s Ambassador to Rwanda, Khalid Musa Dafalla, described the dialogue as an important initiative for engaging young Africans on the values of Pan-Africanism and regional integration.

He commended PAM Rwanda for promoting the ideals of African unity and acknowledged President Kagame’s contribution to advancing cooperation across the continent.

“We appreciate PAM Rwanda for promoting the vision of African unity and good governance championed by President Paul Kagame,” Ambassador Dafalla said. “Our collaboration with PAM Rwanda offers Sudanese youth an opportunity to learn from Rwanda’s development experience, embrace values that foster progress, and strengthen the bonds of friendship between our two countries.”

Although Sudan continues to grapple with an armed conflict that has lasted for more than two years, the ambassador said cooperation between Sudan and Rwanda continues to grow, particularly in education, healthcare, and other areas of mutual interest.

He also thanked the Government of Rwanda for hosting Sudanese nationals, especially students who have sought to continue their education in the country.

According to figures shared during the dialogue, Sudanese students accounted for more than 20 percent of all international students enrolled in Rwandan universities as of July 2025. Sudanese investment in Rwanda has also expanded in recent years, exceeding US$10 million.
