Rwanda’s digital payment ecosystem is set to receive a major boost as users of bank accounts and other financial services begin accessing the full eKash platform from July 14, 2026, enabling faster transfers across different financial institutions.
The rollout is part of efforts to improve payment interoperability and make digital financial services more accessible, following regulations issued by the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) to promote electronic transactions through eKash.
RSwitch, the national payment infrastructure operator, said eKash allows customers to transfer money seamlessly between bank accounts, mobile money accounts and other financial service platforms connected to the system.
Users will be able to make transactions through channels they already use, including USSD services, internet banking and mobile applications provided by their financial institutions.
RSwitch said the service will be available at a transaction fee of no more than Rwf20, with individual financial institutions determining the final charge within the approved limit.
The platform supports transfers of up to Rwf10 million per transaction, although participating institutions may apply lower limits in line with regulatory requirements and their own operational policies.
According to RSwitch, customers will not need to open new accounts or complete additional registration procedures, as existing users of connected financial institutions will automatically be able to access the service.
The company described the rollout as a significant milestone in Rwanda’s transition towards a more integrated digital payment system, reducing barriers between financial service providers and improving the speed and convenience of money transfers.
eKash was introduced by the Government of Rwanda in partnership with RSwitch and other stakeholders to create a unified financial transaction network connecting banks, SACCOs, telecommunications companies and fintech providers.
The platform currently connects 22 financial institutions and has processed more than 46 million transactions since its pilot phase began in 2022 and its official launch in 2025. RSwitch reported that 99% of transactions have been successfully completed, with most transfers taking less than 15 seconds.
