The Ministry in charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) has urged Rwandans to strengthen disaster preparedness measures ahead of the September–December rainy season, as forecasts indicate increased rainfall that could raise the risk of floods, landslides, lightning strikes and strong winds.
The warning follows a forecast by the Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) indicating that the upcoming rainy season could experience above-average rainfall due to the influence of the El Niño climate phenomenon.
The September–December rainy season is usually an important period for agricultural activities, but authorities have warned that heavier rains expected this year require early preparation to prevent and reduce disaster impacts.
