Rwanda’s U-20 men’s national handball team have reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup after an impressive 32-16 victory over Zimbabwe.
Rwanda faced Zimbabwe on Tuesday evening in their final Group A match at the Africa Cup, currently taking place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The match, which started at 6:00 p.m. Kigali time, saw Rwanda make a strong start, taking a 17-10 lead into half-time. They maintained their momentum after the break, scoring 15 goals while conceding just six to secure a convincing 32-16 victory.
In their two previous group-stage matches, Rwanda defeated hosts Côte d’Ivoire 30-25 before suffering a 36-20 defeat to Guinea. Zimbabwe, meanwhile, had lost all of their matches in the group.
Rwanda finished second in Group A behind Guinea, securing their place in the quarter-finals. They will now face Angola, who topped Group B, in the last eight.
In the other quarter-final fixtures, Guinea will face Nigeria, Tunisia will take on the Democratic Republic of Congo, while defending champions Egypt will meet Libya. All four quarter-finals are scheduled to be played on Wednesday.
The quarter-finals carry added significance, as the top five teams at the tournament will secure qualification for the 2027 IHF Men’s Junior World Championship.
