One person was killed and three others seriously injured after a barrel they were using to distil illicit kanyanga alcohol exploded in a forest in Rwamagana District.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, September 14, in Kiryango Village, Nkungu Cell, Munyaga Sector.

Munyaga Sector Executive Secretary Munyentwari Damascene said the four young men had gone into the forest at night to produce kanyanga for sale.

The barrel exploded while they were distilling the illicit alcohol. A piece of metal reportedly struck one of the men, a 20-year-old, who died from his injuries.

The other three victims, aged 14, 16 and 22, sustained serious injuries and were taken to Rwamagana Hospital for treatment.

Local authorities have warned residents against producing or selling kanyanga, which is prohibited in Rwanda, stressing that the practice is illegal and poses serious risks to human life.

Residents have been urged to avoid illicit alcohol production and to report such activities to authorities.
