The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) has announced the completion of construction and rehabilitation works on the Nyagatare-Rwempasha road.
The 18.5-kilometre road was completed at a cost of more than Rwf3.5 billion and is expected to address longstanding challenges that have affected trade, transport and the livelihoods of communities using the route.
RTDA said road users are already benefiting from improved travel conditions, easier transportation of agricultural produce to markets, expanded business opportunities and better sanitation along the road.
The road connects Nyagatare District with Uganda through Ntungamo District, making it an important transport and trade corridor linking communities in Rwanda and Uganda.
The Nyagatare District authorities said the road is expected to play a significant role in boosting the district’s economy and contributing to economic development more broadly.
Residents of Rwempasha Sector said travelling to Nyagatare town had previously been difficult, particularly during the rainy season when potholes and mud made the road difficult to use and disrupted travel and commercial activities.
With the completion of the works, public transport vehicles are now operating along the route, improving connectivity for residents and other road users.
