Authorities have identified and are upgrading alternative routes to ease traffic disruptions as expansion works continue on the Prince House–Giporoso–Masaka road, a major corridor serving commuters travelling to Masaka, Kabuga and Kigali International Airport.
The supporting roads are being improved to keep traffic moving and reduce congestion while work continues on the busy Prince House–Masaka route.
State Minister for Infrastructure, Col Claudien Bizimungu, said motorists should plan their journeys in advance and use designated alternative routes depending on their destination.
“This road reaches Masaka Hospital, connects to Dubai Port and links Kigali International Airport with several destinations that are frequently used by residents. People should plan their journeys in advance, travel early or use the alternative routes that have been provided,” Bizimungu said.
Among the alternatives is the Giporoso–Korodoro route towards Kigali International Airport, along with other connecting roads, including the junction known as Segiteri in Kanombe.
Motorists travelling towards Kabuga can use the Witunda–Busanza–Segiteri route, while those coming from Kicukiro can use Kicukiro Centre–Kagarama–Busanza.
Another alternative is the Sonatube–Sahara–Kabeza–Rubirizi–Busanza route. Motorists from the Utexrwa area can also use the Nyarutarama–Kimironko corridor.
For travellers from the eastern parts of Kigali, authorities have identified a road serving the industrial area around Kigali Parent as another option.
Bizimungu said the Ministry of Infrastructure is working with the City of Kigali to improve the alternative routes and ensure that residents can continue travelling safely while construction is underway.
“We are working together with the City of Kigali to ensure these roads are improved and that residents can travel without unnecessary obstacles and reach their destinations safely,” he said.
He added that the Gasogi–Ndera road is also among the projects expected to provide additional traffic alternatives as the Prince House–Masaka expansion advances towards Masaka.
Meanwhile, Rwanda National Police has urged motorists to follow traffic instructions and plan their journeys ahead of time.
Police spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga warned drivers against ignoring directions from traffic officers, saying motorists could eventually find themselves unable to proceed or return if they fail to follow designated routes.
