Rwanda’s national football team, Amavubi, has moved its training camp to Egypt after two friendly matches scheduled to be played in Morocco during the June FIFA international window were called off.
The team had arrived in Marrakech on June 1 to prepare for matches against Comoros on June 6 and Tanzania on June 9 as part of preparations for upcoming international competitions.
However, the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) said Moroccan football authorities informed it that the matches could not proceed due to security-related concerns.
The cancellation was compounded by a decision involving Tanzania’s national team, Taifa Stars. The Tanzania Football Federation said it had been advised that the match against Rwanda would not take place as part of measures aimed at preventing the spread of Ebola.
In a statement issued late on June 3, FERWAFA said it respected the decision taken by the relevant authorities in Morocco and reaffirmed its commitment to the national team’s preparation programme.
“The preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers remain on course and will continue as planned,” the federation said.
Following the cancellation of the fixtures, Amavubi relocated to Cairo, where the team will continue its training camp from June 4 to June 11.
The June international window was expected to provide head coach Adel Amrouche with an opportunity to assess his squad and test tactical options ahead of Rwanda’s next competitive assignments.
FERWAFA has not announced whether replacement matches will be arranged during the team’s stay in Egypt.
The cancelled fixtures represent a setback for Amavubi’s preparations, with the team now expected to focus exclusively on training sessions as it builds towards the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
