AS Kigali have appointed Justin Bisengimana as their new head coach on a two-year contract, entrusting the highly rated tactician with leading the club’s resurgence after a difficult 2025/26 campaign.

The City of Kigali-backed side confirmed the appointment on Thursday, June 25, with Bisengimana taking over from Shaban Mbarushimana.

The appointment follows an impressive season for Bisengimana at Gicumbi FC, where he steered the newly promoted club to a 12th-place finish in the BK Pro League, comfortably securing top-flight survival. His performance earned him a nomination for the league’s Coach of the Year award.

AS Kigali endured one of their toughest seasons in recent years, with off-the-pitch administrative challenges contributing to inconsistent performances and a prolonged relegation battle. The club eventually finished 14th in the 18-team league with 35 points.

Bisengimana’s arrival is part of an ambitious rebuilding exercise ahead of the new season. AS Kigali have already bolstered their squad with several new signings, including Nigerian striker Daniel Ikapo Kalu, Alexandre Munyemana, Clement Twagirumukiza, Emmanuel Niyigena, Kenedy Hoziana and Aimable Ntarindwa, who joined from Rayon Sports.

The club has also secured the futures of key players by extending the contracts of Saidi Uwiduhaye, Tharcisse Nshimiyimana, Pascal Kanuma and Patient Ndikuriyo as it seeks greater stability and improved performances.

Meanwhile, Gicumbi FC have moved quickly to replace Bisengimana, appointing Afhamia Lotfi as their new head coach on a two-year contract.
