Rwandan media personality Uwase Blandine, popularly known as Blandy Starr, has announced her decision to leave journalism and pursue a career in music as a DJ.
After years of working in Rwanda’s media industry, Blandy says she is ready to turn a long-standing passion for music into a full-time career, marking a new chapter in her professional journey.
The former media personality revealed that her interest in DJing dates back to her secondary school days, when she developed a strong passion for music and began to believe she had a talent for mixing.
Her ambitions, however, were not always met with encouragement.
Blandy said some of the people she shared her dream with discouraged her, arguing that DJing was not a profession suitable for a woman. Rather than abandoning the idea, she chose to pursue it despite the criticism.
Determined to develop her skills, she travelled to Kenya, where she spent three months studying DJing before continuing her training in Uganda.
She also credited Shakib Cham, the former husband of Zari Hassan, for playing an important role in encouraging her to pursue the career. According to Blandy, he supported her ambitions and encouraged her to take her talent seriously and turn it into a profession.
Blandy is now preparing for her official debut as a DJ, which is scheduled for September 19, 2026, at Atelier Du Vin.
The transition marks a significant change for Blandy, who has spent several years building a name for herself in Rwanda’s media industry.
She rose to prominence through her work with TV10 and Izuba TV and later became known for This and That, a YouTube show she co-hosted with Tessy.
With her move into DJing, Blandy is stepping away from the career that made her a familiar face in Rwanda’s media landscape to pursue a passion she has held since her teenage years.
