A 23-year-old woman and her seven-month-old baby who had been missing for 11 days have been found dead in a toilet in Gatebe Sector, Burera District, with authorities suspecting they were killed.
The two were reported missing on September 11, 2026, prompting a search for them in the area.
The Rwanda National Police spokesperson for the Northern Province, CIP Ignace Ngirabakunzi, confirmed to Umunota that the woman and her baby were found dead in a toilet and that circumstances surrounding their deaths suggest they may have been murdered.
“They had been missing for several days and were being searched for after they disappeared on September 11, 2026. They were found in a toilet, and it appeared that they may have been killed,” Ngirabakunzi said.
Five people have so far been arrested in connection with the case and are being investigated as authorities work to establish what caused the deaths.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
