On April 7, 2026, residents of Nyanza District launched the official week of mourning and 100-day remembrance of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, marking the 32nd commemoration.

The opening ceremonies took place across all villages in the district, with major events centered at the Nyanza Genocide Memorial. The program brought together local residents, government officials, and security personnel, including the acting district mayor, Kajyambere Patrick, the district council secretary, the vice mayor in charge of social affairs, and leaders from the sector, cell, and village levels.

The event featured lighting the “light of hope,” laying flowers at the memorial, moments of reflection, and prayers. MINUBUMWE representative Gasore Clement led discussions and an exchange of reflections on the lessons of the genocide.

Participants also listened to a special address by His Excellency President Paul Kagame, reinforcing the importance of remembrance and the ongoing commitment to unity and reconciliation.

The 100-day remembrance period in Nyanza is set to conclude on June 21, 2026, at the Nyamiyaga Genocide Memorial in Rwabicuma Sector, highlighting the district’s continued dedication to honoring victims and promoting historical awareness among its communities.
