Construction begins on Bumbogo road promised by President Kagame

Construction has started on a long-awaited tarmac road in Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District, fulfilling a pledge made by President Paul Kagame during his 2024 presidential campaign.

The project marks the beginning of works on a road that residents have described for years as impassable during rainy seasons, limiting transport and slowing local economic activity.

During a campaign rally in Bumbogo on July 12, 2024, President Kagame assured residents that the dirt road connecting the area would be upgraded to asphalt, describing it as a priority commitment.

“The dirt road we used to get here will soon be transformed into a tarmac road,” Kagame said at the time. “That is my promise to you.”

Residents say the start of construction has restored confidence in the promise and is expected to ease mobility, improve access to services and increase land values in the area.

According to the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA), the project will be implemented in phases.

The first phase covers a 2.5-kilometre section of the road. The second phase, planned for the 2026/27 fiscal year, will extend the network by 15 kilometres, linking Zindiro, Masizi, Birembo and Gasanze, with an additional 4.5-kilometre stretch connecting Zindiro to Kimironko via Mitsingi.

A third section, connecting Bumbogo to surrounding areas and extending toward Birembo, is also planned pending availability of funding.

Once completed, the full road network will span about 25 kilometres and is expected to cost over Rwf30 billion, according to RTDA.

The development is part of ongoing infrastructure expansion efforts aimed at improving urban mobility in Kigali’s fast-growing sectors.
