Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) coordinator Corneille Nangaa has rejected the idea of engaging in talks with the government in Kinshasa, arguing that the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo cannot be solved through additional political agreements.
In a video released by the AFC/M23 alliance, Nangaa said he does not support the dialogue process being pursued by President Félix Tshisekedi’s administration in partnership with religious leaders, arguing that the initiative would not address the root causes of the country’s challenges.
Nangaa accused the Kinshasa government of being an administration that “misleads people and does not respect agreements reached with others.”
He said Congo’s problems cannot be resolved through what he described as “political agreements filled with hypocrisy,” but instead require a complete rebuilding of state institutions and a transformation of governance systems.
He identified four key priorities that he believes are necessary to achieve lasting peace and stability: creating a strong national army capable of defending the country, establishing a police force that protects citizens, ensuring an independent judiciary free from political interference, and building effective leadership structures that deliver services to the population.
Nangaa’s remarks represent a direct rejection of Kinshasa’s proposed dialogue initiative and underline the difficulties facing efforts to bring together key actors involved in the conflict in eastern DR Congo.
He argued that the country’s crisis requires deep institutional reforms rather than political settlements alone, calling for fundamental changes in the functioning of state institutions.
The statement comes amid ongoing efforts to find a political solution to insecurity in eastern DR Congo, where disagreements over governance, security and political representation remain major obstacles to lasting peace.
