Gasabo District on Tuesday granted Rwandan citizenship to 25 foreign nationals from various countries, marking another step in Rwanda’s efforts to attract skilled individuals, investors and long-term residents.

The citizenship certificates were handed over on January 13, 2026, during an official ceremony held at the district headquarters and presided over by the Executive Secretary of Gasabo District, Bernard Bayasese.

Speaking at the event, Bayasese urged the new citizens to uphold national unity and resilience, while actively contributing to Rwanda’s development agenda. He called on them to work closely with local authorities in implementing the government’s five-year National Strategy for Transformation (NST2) and supporting Vision 2050.

He noted that Gasabo District, which forms a significant part of the City of Kigali, is prioritising the development of a clean, orderly and secure urban environment, and encouraged the new citizens to play an active role in achieving this vision.

Rwandan citizenship is governed by the Organic Law of July 16, 2021, which provides for naturalisation on grounds including investment, exceptional skills, national interest, honour and long-term residence. Individuals granted citizenship enjoy the same rights and obligations as Rwandans by birth, unless otherwise stipulated by law.

Rwanda has in recent years expanded pathways to citizenship as part of broader reforms aimed at promoting economic growth, social cohesion and global engagement.
