Residents of Kigali, particularly young people, have been urged to avoid excessive drinking, illicit alcohol and other drugs, and to report locations where illegal alcohol products are still being stored or sold.
The call was made on Saturday, September 26, 2026, during the monthly community work programme held in Mbandazi Cell, Rusororo Sector, Gasabo District.
Following the community work, government officials addressed residents and encouraged them to avoid excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse.
The event was attended by Minister of Health Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana, Kigali City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva, Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) Secretary-General Bonnie Mugabe and other officials.
Players from Rwanda’s national under-23 and under-17 teams, who are currently in camp preparing for African competitions, also participated. Common Jannali FC from Australia, which is visiting Rwanda, joined residents of Rusororo in the community work.
In his remarks, Dr. Nsanzimana highlighted the “Sober Gen” campaign, which encourages people, particularly young people, to avoid illicit alcohol, drugs and excessive drinking.
He said alcohol abuse can have negative consequences for young people, families and national development.
“There is no country in the world that has developed while its people are addicted to alcohol. Instead, there are countries that have declined, while young people have lost the ability to contribute to building their countries because of alcohol-related problems,” Nsanzimana said.
Kigali City Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva also urged residents of Rusororo to help address problems including the production and consumption of illicit alcohol, which he said had been reported in the area.
He called on residents to provide information about places where illegal alcohol products are still being stored.
During the discussions, National Electoral Commission Chairperson Oda Gasinzigwa reminded residents that local government elections are scheduled to begin on October 24, 2026.
The community work was also attended by musicians including Bruce Melodie and Davis D, who later performed for the young people and used the occasion to encourage them to stay away from drugs and substance abuse.
