Dr. Gakwenzire Philbert, President of Ibuka, has praised the Rwandan government for its pivotal role in helping survivors of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi rebuild their lives over the past 32 years.

Speaking during the Kwibuka 32 commemoration at BK Arena on April 7, 2026, following a remembrance walk from Gasabo District, Dr. Gakwenzire described the journey of survivors as arduous but marked by resilience and national recovery.

He highlighted that Rwanda’s progress and restoration of its international standing would not have been possible without strong leadership addressing the deep and lasting impact of the genocide.

Kwibuka, he said, provides Rwandans with a critical moment to reflect on the divisions that led to the genocide, to support survivors, and to confront the emotional, psychological, and physical scars left behind.

“This commemoration is not only a time to honor those we lost but also a call to collective healing and action, ensuring that Rwanda continues to thrive and that genocide never happens again,” Dr. Gakwenzire said.

He also underscored the need for continued support for survivors suffering from trauma, applauding government programs that offer comprehensive care. He called for justice for all perpetrators, wherever they may be in the world, through proper judicial channels.
