The City of Kigali has temporarily closed the Inkundamahoro building after its management repeatedly failed to comply with directives to address safety, sanitation and environmental violations.
The closure was announced on August 8, 2026, following several inspections and notices issued to the building’s management between May and August.
According to the city authorities, the management was repeatedly instructed to correct serious problems identified at the premises but failed to address some of the key violations.
One of the major concerns was the discharge of untreated wastewater containing sewage into a wetland.
The City of Kigali said the practice occurred again on August 7, despite previous directives requiring the management to stop discharging wastewater into the wetland.
The authorities said the decision to close the building was taken after the management failed to comply with the instructions and continued practices that could harm the environment and public health.
Inkundamahoro will remain closed until an inspection by the relevant authorities confirms that all outstanding violations have been addressed, according to the city.
The City of Kigali urged the building’s management to urgently implement the required corrective measures so that the premises can be safely reopened and businesses and other activities operating there can resume.
The city also reminded property owners, building managers, businesses and residents that discharging untreated wastewater or sewage into wetlands, drainage channels, waterways or other unauthorised areas is prohibited.
It warned that anyone who violates the regulations will face penalties under the law.
The closure comes as Kigali continues to enforce regulations aimed at protecting the city’s sanitation, environment and public health.
The City of Kigali urged residents and property managers to take responsibility for maintaining clean and safe surroundings, stressing that keeping the capital clean, safe and healthy requires collective responsibility.
