Police in Gasabo District have arrested two men suspected of trafficking cannabis, as operations against drug-related crimes continue across the city.

The suspects, aged 43 and 40, were arrested on Sunday at around 11:00 a.m. in Ramba Village, Musave Cell, Bumbogo Sector, while allegedly packaging the narcotic for distribution.

According to police, the duo was found in possession of 2 kilograms of cannabis and 237 sachets, reportedly prepared for sale from their residence.

The spokesperson for the Rwanda National Police in Kigali City, CIP Wellars Gahonzire, said the arrests followed intelligence received from residents who reported suspected drug trafficking activities in the area.

He commended the public for timely cooperation that led to the seizure, noting that the drugs were intercepted before reaching consumers. He also warned that narcotics pose a serious threat to public health and security.

The suspects are being held at Bumbogo Police Station as investigations continue before the case is forwarded to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).

Police reiterated that drug trafficking remains a serious offence and urged those involved to abandon the illegal trade and seek lawful livelihoods. Authorities stressed that enforcement remains active in both urban and rural areas, with strong community support.

The arrests follow a similar operation carried out last week in Rutunga Sector, also in Gasabo District, where other individuals were apprehended over cannabis-related offences.

In Rwanda, cannabis is classified as a highly dangerous narcotic. The law provides for life imprisonment and a fine of between Rwf 20 million and Rwf 30 million for anyone convicted of producing, processing, transporting, or selling it.
